On 7 June, 2013 the award ceremony of Slovakia’s history competition took place in the UNESCO Information and Documentation Center in Bratislava. A total of 49 contributions written by 84 participants were submitted. The Slovak competition is organised by the Centre for Communication and Development (SCCD), a non-profit organisation which was founded in 2005.

The topic of this year’s competition round was „The Role of Women and Men in Slovakia during the 20th Century”. Four of the very interesting prize-winning works were presented during the ceremony. The first prize in the category for individual works went to Katarína Mochnacká for her essay: “Life Stories of Women during the Holocaust”. Natália Ondáková received the second prizefor her work “Darina Bancíkova - the first Woman to Become a Protestant Priest in Slovakia”. The third prize was awarded to Dominika Kecsöová for her essay: “The Colourful Life of Women”.

In the category for multiple authors the first place was shared by two essays: “Lida Mlichová- First Book Designer” by Gabriela Mičurová and Michaela Buňákova and the “Feminization of Education in the 20th Century on Elementary and Secondary Schools in Žiar nad Hronom” written by Ema Zorkóczyová, Nina Holičková and Petra Rafaelisová. Every participant received a diploma and a book from the sponsor, which is the Nation's Memory Institute.

The famous Slovak scientist and this year’s patron of the competition, Dr. Eva Siracká, presented the awards to the students. Dr. Siracká herself awarded the “Sasakawa Health Prize” for her outstanding innovative work in the development of health at the 2011 World Health Organization Assembly in Geneva. In 2006 she was named „Woman of the 21st Century“ for her lifelong contribution and representation of Slovakian women in the world. For more information about Dr. Siracká, please click here.

The ceremony was followed by a debate about the topic of historical and contemporary gender issues. The debate was headed by Zuzana Jezerská, director of the SCCD, and Tünde Lengyelová from the Slovak Academy of Science.
