For the very first time since the EUSTORY Network was established in 2001, we were horrified to see that the award ceremony of the Russian EUSTORY member competition in Moscow on 28 April was attacked by nationalists. We see this attack as a direct attempt to counter a critical approach towards the past, an approach that is of crucial importance for an open and democratic society. Therefore, we strongly condemn the attack and express our solidarity with our colleagues of the International Memorial Society and all supporters of the competition as well as the participants, their parents and teachers.

Together with Memorial and all other EUSTORY member competitions we will continue to support an open, democratic and differentiated way of dealing with our common European past and present. We will also continue to foster cross-border European dialogue in order to understand differences and overcome divisions and in order to counter rising nationalism.
