Topic of Tallinn Academy

After a two-months selection process, the 43 participants of our EUSTORY academies have been named. They come from Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Norway, Poland, Russia, Sweden, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic, and Wales and will attend our academies in Berlin and Tallinn in September.

The topic of the Berlin Academy is People and Power.

People are the protagonists of history. But who – or what – determines what happens in our world and times? How was power exerted in the past and what is the picture today? How can one person or movements in society influence the powers that be? The workshop in Berlin will focus on these and related questions.

It is designed as an interactive workshop that will seek answers to current and historical questions about power, and will highlight interactions between individuals, institutions and structures in history and politics. Dimensions of power, structures of opportunities for players at a variety of levels, as well as channels of influence and different forms of governance will take centre stage in scenario workshops, discussions and working groups.

The topic of the Tallinn academy is Not for Free: Challenges to Democracy in Europe

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the democratic constitution in Estonia, one of the smallest
and youngest democracies in Europe. We want to use this occasion to examine the situation of democracy
in Europe today.

What happens when the democratic rights we take for granted, like freedom of speech, are
abused to manipulate public opinion or to violate the basis of democracy? How can we enable young
people to read, listen and think critically so as to form their own opinions?

Together, the participants will discuss situations of populist manipulation and democratic participation / inclusion
in their  countries,  detect dangers and challenges and analyse similarities and differences.

The Berlin academy will start on September 14th, the one in Tallinn on September 22nd. The participants will share their insights and experiences on their live blog: http://eustory.wordpress.com
