Nobel Peace Prize for MEMORIAL: Congratulations!
MEMORIAL International will be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize during the award ceremony in Oslo City Hall on December 10, 2022. The Russian non-governmental organisation, along with the Belarusian human rights advocate Ales Bialiatski and the Ukrainian human rights organisation Center for Civil Liberties, will be honoured for their active representation of civil society as well as their contributions for democracy, human rights, education, and commemoration in their respective countries. The prize recognises MEMORIAL’s undertakings of historical documentation which is considered vital for apprehending the present and the future as well as the struggles of fighting for peace, human rights, and an equitable justice system.
At EUSTORY, we have been associated with MEMORIAL International for three decades. It is the oldest Russian non-governmental organisation and a founding member of our EUSTORY Network. For more than 20 years, MEMORIAL has been organising a very successful history competition for school students in Russia.
After MEMORIAL International was classified as a "foreign agent" in Russia in 2016, the organisation was liquidated in February 2022 by the country's Supreme Court. Nevertheless, the various national and regional MEMORIAL organisations inside and outside Russia are motivated to continue working for a diversified culture of commemoration. We are happy to continue working with MEMORIAL, supporting their concepts on how to organise educational activities for young people with a Russian background in Europe.
