"The Holocaust through the eyes of Jewish children” (2015)
In her competition entry of 2015, Eden researched the fate of Jewish children during the Holocaust. She focused on children’s experiences in times of persecution and war which are sometimes quite different to adult’s narratives. However, regardless of their different way of experiencing the atrocities of the Holocaust, Jewish children were deprived of their childhood: In order to survive they had to hide, or had to deny their Jewish origin living with foster parents or even in orphanages. As a result, Jewish children suffered severe identity crises and had to cope with psychological problems.
For her research, Eden analysed different biographies, books and original historical material in archives, and she interviewed contemporary witnesses, for example the Holocaust survivor Mrs. Sara Avinun.
For her study, Eden was awarded the third prize in the Israeli History Competition of 2014/2015. Besides that she won a scholarship from the “Massuah Institute for the Study of the Holocaust” as well as a prize from “Yad Vashem”.
