How do international youth encounters support cross-border dialogue and understanding? This was the leading question on 28 March 2017 at an exchange at the Embassy of Iceland in Berlin, hosted by the Icelandic Ambassador to Germany Martin Eyjólfsson and the Director General of the Permanent International Secretariat of the Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS), Ambassador Maira Mora.

On March 26, 2017, the award ceremony of Denmark’s 11th EUSTORY History Competition took place during the historical festival »Historiske Dage« in Copenhagen. Organised by the Danish History Teachers’ Association, this year’s competition encouraged Danish students to explore the topic of »Denmark in the world - the world in Denmark«. In total, 70 participants submitted 24 entries.
Finja Haehser wrote about the illegitimate children of SS-soldiers after the Second World War. Her grandfather, whom she interviewed, was such an illegitimate child. This year's competition is the twenty-fifth consecutive German History Contest that Körber-Stiftung has organised. “The large number of participants working on the topic of "God and the world. Religion makes history" proves that young people are interested in religion,” said Sven Tetzlaff, head of the foundation's Education Department.
For his research about the story of a photograph which was taken in 1943 on the Eastern front during the Second World War, Jiri Klůc was awarded third prize in the 2015/2016 Czech history competition. When the organisers of the Slovak history competition announced last year's topic "History in Photographs", they could hardly imagine the extremely positive response from the public and the media. The winning entries were exhibited in a public space in Bratislava. Public interest was so strong that the exibition period was extended.
Every year, more than 10,000 young Europeans conduct historical research within the EUSTORY Network. These »Traces of History« portray the manifold topics of the students’ works and the faces behind them. We will present some of them on a regular basis. Today, we would like to introduce you to Cecilie's work. She looked at the effects of the industrial revolution in the textile production in her Danish hometown in the middle of the 20th century.

The President of the Republic of Estonia announced the topic »Prerequisites of Estonian Independence« for the 18th EUSTORY Competition for student research papers in history. As February 24th, 2018 will mark the centenary of Estonia’s independence, it is just the right time to begin the search for the core reasons that led to this historic event.
